Combining business, investment, stakeholder, and policy evidence to identify gaps and strategic opportunities in Mississauga's entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Project purpose
A broad support mandate required a clearer ecosystem diagnosis.
IDEA Mississauga needed a connected view of business growth, investment patterns, and practitioner-reported support gaps to identify where further coordination might be useful.
Research strategy
The diagnosis combined market evidence, stakeholder experience, and comparable practice.
Each source answered a different part of the ecosystem question. Strategic conclusions were based on how the sources reinforced, qualified, or challenged one another.
Establish the market baseline
Firm growth, sector structure, funding stages, and foreign investment showed where economic activity was visible and how it was distributed.
Explain service and ecosystem gaps
Interviews with practitioners, clients, and industry partners surfaced service needs and constraints beyond administrative and investment records.
Assess comparable practices
Jurisdictional research examined how other municipalities and ecosystem organizations structured entrepreneurship support and partnerships.

Building a baseline without letting headline totals dominate.
Business Census and company records were organized around common sector definitions so firm growth could be compared with investment activity. Funding records were then separated by company stage, preventing large post-IPO transactions from being treated as evidence of broad early-stage capital availability.

Interviews showed that business needs extended beyond service awareness. Some needs were shared across the ecosystem, including clearer funding pathways, ongoing support, and stronger networks. Others depended on business stage or sector, such as access to technology mentors, specialized expertise, and infrastructure.

High-growth firm activity, venture funding, foreign investment, and stakeholder-reported needs were compared to distinguish established strengths from emerging opportunities. Comparable practice was then used to assess possible municipal and partnership responses without assuming another jurisdiction's model could be copied directly.

The headline investment total mainly represented later-stage capital, while early-stage financing remained a separate concern.
